Keeping Your Pet Safe During the Holiday Season
The holiday season is full of joy, gatherings, and celebrations—but for our pets, it can also bring new hazards and stressors. With guests coming and going, decorations everywhere, and tempting treats within reach, it’s important to take a few extra precautions to keep your furry family members safe, comfortable, and happy throughout the festivities.
Watch the Decorations
Holiday décor may look beautiful, but many items can be dangerous for pets. Tinsel, ribbons, ornaments, candles, and electrical cords can pose choking or burn hazards if chewed or knocked over. Secure decorations out of reach, avoid breakable ornaments at pet level, and always supervise lit candles or fireplaces.
Be Mindful of Holiday Foods
Seasonal foods are often irresistible to pets—but many are toxic. Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, alcohol, and foods containing xylitol should never be shared. Even rich or fatty foods can cause stomach upset. Let guests know not to sneak table scraps, and keep trash cans securely covered.
Create a Calm Space
Holiday gatherings can be overwhelming for pets, especially those sensitive to noise or crowds. Set up a quiet, cozy area where your pet can relax away from the excitement. This gives them a safe retreat and helps reduce anxiety during busy moments.
Keep an Eye on Doors and Guests
With frequent arrivals and departures, it’s easy for pets to slip out unnoticed. Remind guests to be mindful of open doors, ensure your pet is wearing proper identification, and consider using baby gates or crates during peak activity times.
Maintain Routines When Possible
While the holidays are busy, pets thrive on consistency. Try to stick to regular feeding, walking, and play schedules as much as possible. Maintaining routine helps your pet feel secure—even when everything else feels festive and new.
Celebrate Safely
The holidays are a wonderful time to celebrate milestones, traditions, and time together—including with our pets. Whether it’s a small gathering or a full-scale celebration, planning with your pet’s safety in mind ensures everyone can enjoy the season stress-free.
At The Barkday Planner, we believe celebrations should be joyful and safe for every member of the family—paws included. With thoughtful planning and a few precautions, you can create holiday memories that are just as happy as they are safe!
Happy Howlidays!
